Earth day
Earth Day is an annual event held on April 22nd with the aim of increasing public awareness of environmental problems. Millions of people all over the world gather, on Earth Day every year, to clean up dirt, to protest against threats to the environment, and to celebrate progress made in reducing pollution.
Earth Day began in the United States of America. In 1969, American Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed that a day be held for environmental awareness on campus. The following year, environmental lawyer and activist Dennis Hays, then a recent graduate of Stanford University, led hundreds of students to plan and organize the first Earth Day. About 20 million people participated in the original event on April 22, 1970.
The first Earth Day in 1970 helped to alert people to the dangers of pollution, and urged them to adopt a new environmental movement. In the same year, the US Congress created the Environmental Protection Agency to develop and implement pollution standards. The Congress also passed the Clean Air Act of 1970, which limits air pollution resulting from the use of cars, utilities, and industries. Shortly thereafter, other new environmental laws were passed.
